Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Posted by Unknown at 19:33:00

Sypnosis (from Goodreads):
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. In just a few weeks she'll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. And as a pretty, she'll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world-- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally's choice will change her world forever...

My Review -- 5/5 stars!
I read this book a year ago but for some apparent reason didn't continue with the series. I loved the world then and now that I re-read I love it even more.
The only I wanted to re-read the series was to continue with the other books in this bestseller. Absolutely loved this world full of action and romance. The one thing I'll assure you guys about is that this book as a lot of action. I'm talking kicking, fighting, jumping from what I assume a 3 or more feet above, jumping fences.
I liked how Scott introduced Rusties in this book. Whenever a history was given by one of the characters, it reminded me of the world today.

Characters:

Tally Youngblood
From the starting, she wanted to be pretty. She couldn't wait until she would get an operation and live in the Garbo Mansion with her childhood best friend Peris and go to parties all the time. She was sure that she would love the life of being pretty and nothing would ruin that feeling for her. Until some circumstances/characters in the book make her change her mind.

Peris
Peris, as I mentioned before is the childhood best friend of Tally. He is 3 months older than her which in her case is unfair. Since he turned 16 first he gets to be pretty. Now that he is, she has to wait until she is 16 to turn pretty.

Shay
She and tally met at the beginning of summer. Their birthdays are the same so they would turn together. But Shay doesn't believe in turning pretty and the society she is living in. She wants to live differently. That is the beginning of some adventure in Tally's life as Shay tells her secrets that no one would ever thought of.

David
If you get into the book and are at least 50 pages in, you will read of this mysterious David. Basically, Shay believes in David, but Tally doesn't. Shay says that she has met him, but Tally thinks she's going crazy or hallucinating. Until the mysterious David is finally into view to Tally after some serious blackmailing.

Maddy and Az
As further the novel goes, Tally meets David's parents. I thought they would just be some side characters who wouldn't matter anymore but turns out both of them are pretty important to support the plot line of the book. They know some secrets that are really hard to believe at once and might change what one thinks about the society that they live in.

Croy
There are a lot of runaways that are mentioned in this book. But the main ones are basically called Shay's old friends, but the one with a name is Croy. The one word to describe him would be suspicious and friendly. He made many suspicions when someone arrived but gradually got used to her and started being friendly.

Dr. Cable
Dr. Cable is the meanie in this book. It's like watching mean girls, except that Regina's twin sister Dr. Cable takes place. She's not exactly a mean girl like stealing boyfriends or crashing parties or talking trash about other people, she just black mails a lot of people. She describes her black mails as a rescue party but in reality she wants to destroy whatever is left of "real civilization"

The Plot:
The story takes place in Uglyville, New Pretty Town, the Rusty Ruins and The Smoke. Perspective is told by Tally and Tally only. A lot of different stuff is happening in the awake of this book and its like watching a tv show with a lot of action in it. This is a society where when one turns 16, he/she undergo a operation. In the operation, they replace everything.

Now this next part may gross you out...

They replace everything. And by that I mean Everything. They change your face shape to body structure. This goes so far that they even change your skin.
But all of the effort comes with a price. And the price that is paid by people who didn't even know that they paid it already. But the price is much more dangerous than you think
